How have you guys gone about dropping a class that you already received aid for? I can't really afford to have to pay the aid back tbh. I'd go from 13 units to 11 so it's not THAT far under full time, but it's still under full time. Plus, this is an impacted class so I get a note on my transcript (not planning on grad school anyway) and I have to pay a small fee.
This is all because I'm about to switch my major to something I don't hate* but I'm stuck in this stupid ass class that I hate. I can either drop it or continue going to the end, probably fail or get a low grade, and then switch to the major where I don't even need it anymore. I'm leaning towards the latter but I'd still like to know your experiences!
*backstory for people who may wanna know: I'm currently a Lingustics and Computer Science major. I transferred Fall 2018. I have an AS degree in CS. That said, I really don't like CS at all. I know for SURE I never wanna be a programmer but I was keeping CS because it looks good. Now I wanna change to Ling and Anthropology because I actually like both of those subjects. I LOVED Anthropology when I took it as a GE in Community College and it actually helped me become a better and more loving and understanding person of my fellow human beings! I'm gonna still specialize in Computing which basically means I can take a few CS classes, most of which I've already done but there's two classes that I'd actually be interested in taking left over (they're about AI), and have the specialization on the degree.

You lose aid if you drop below full time.
Go talk to your advisors. Is it too late to get a one credit course to keep you full time?

Thanks for the response!
Actually, since this is an impacted course, I can't drop it anyway since it's past week 2 unless some extreme circumstances come up lol. I didn't know that when I initially posted this. I guess it's for the better though so I don't have to go through that whole process. I'll just tough it out. If I get a low grade it won't kill my GPA and if I fail I won't have to take it again anyway.

Now I gotta question, what if you're on FA and are part time and wanting to drop a class? anyone done that before, will I still be affected??

Depends on how low you drop. There's "brackets", for lack of a better word right now. The brackets are basically how many units you need to be in to be considered in this bracket. For example, the full time bracket is 12+ units. then the next bracket down 11 or less (I don't know exactly what the lower limit is). Then there's another bracket underneath that. If you are still in the unit bracket then it won't really affect financial aid. If not then you lose some. I think for each bracket you go down you lose 25%. So 100% would be full time then the next bracket down you'd only get 75% of what you would have at full time and so on and so forth. You'd have to talk to the FA department though because I don't remember exact bracket number even though I've seen a diagram on it before.
Some of this info could be a little wrong because again, I can't remember the exact diagram. Sorry about that!

Thank you! I set up an appointment to talk with an adviser so I hope I can drop it or something!

Did everything turn out okay?
LOL yeah! I failed the class. I'm actually re-taking it right now despite thinking I wouldn't have to. I decided to stay in my old major. I got a renewed passion for it! I decided to take an extra year at university so I can really focus and get good at the subject instead of taking a bunch of classes at once to graduate faster.
I'm actually doing pretty good at the assignments. Also, the TAs are SUPER helpful this year and give us a BUNCH of resources. I'm really happy!
Thanks for asking!
